Mali hosts second successful community health campaign, commends AMP Health’s contribution

Our mission is to support governments to build visionary and effective teams, enabling them to achieve their goals more effectively. We are honoured that our efforts have been recognised with a certificate of recognition from Mali’s Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene for our contributions to community health.

AMP Health’s roots are embedded in community health. Our first partnership, which started in 2015, was with Kenya’s community health team. While we have since expanded our scope to work in other areas such as maternal health, malaria, and non-communicable disease, community health remains an important part of our mission.

Community health workers (CHW) are essential to the delivery of comprehensive healthcare services. They help manage maternal and child health, facilitate vaccination campaigns, and manage chronic diseases. Their local knowledge and direct involvement make them a critical link between health systems and the people they serve, increasing the overall effectiveness of a country’s national health strategies.

Between June 2022 and May 2024, AMP Health partnered with Mali’s Sub-Directorate of Health Establishments and Regulation (SDESR) to strengthen its leadership and management capacity and improve community health in the country. An AMP Health Management Partner, Moussa Diakité, provided embedded support and was stationed within the Ministry of Public Health and Hygiene alongside the SDESR team.

Key achievements during the partnership period included strengthening the management and organisation of the team, improving the implementation of activities, strengthening monitoring and evaluation, and increasing communication internally and with the public. The SDESR team’s commitment to improving community health in Mali was clear throughout the partnership and has continued as the team entered the sustainability phase in June 2024.

The team recently held Mali’s second annual National Days of Essential Community Care campaign on 25 and 26 July 2024. The event brought together key community health stakeholders, including civil society organisations, technical and financial partners, and CHWs. In addition, senior government figures including the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation and the Minister of Health and Social Development were in attendance.

The presence of both ministers underlined the national priority given to community health. It shows the importance of mobilising all health actors to strengthen the role of community health workers who play a pivotal role in treating all kinds of health issues.

AMP Health’s contribution to community health in Mali was also recognised at the event. Our Management Partner, Moussa, was on hand to receive a certificate of recognition from the Minister of Health and Social Development, highlighting AMP’s efforts to improve the management and delivery of essential community health services in Mali.

During the event, Moussa moderated key discussion panels on topics such as ‘Essential Healthcare in the Context of Conflict’ and ‘Instutionalising Community Health Strategy’. These discussions generated rich exchanges and demonstrated the importance of effective leadership and strategic planning in overcoming challenges.

We are delighted about the SDESR team’s ongoing success and enthused that they are utilising the skills strengthened in our partnership to execute ongoing campaigns. This demonstrates their continued commitment to improving community health and we look forward to seeing the impact the SDESR team will have in years to come.
